Beautiful Urdu calligraphy in embroidery on a cotton tunic,
meant to be worn as a front open overlay on kurtas, shirts or dresses.
It features Urdu calligraphy that spells out the phrase "Perahan darvesh ka"
in repeating loops along the waist band. Perahan darvesh ka, when translated literally, means 'the attire of the dervishes'. Sufi Derishes are diciples of the Mevlevi Order of Sufism, of which alāl Uddin Muhammad Rumi, or simply Rumi is believed to be the originator. They practice whirling, where the performer aims to abandon his or her ego or personal desires by spinning her body in repetitive circles. Sufis go through these exertions to attain an ecstatic trance and reach God. Dervishes try to approach God not by religious scholarship, but by virtues and individual experience. Their attire is characterized by 'saadgi' or simplicity and purity. In the words of Sufi Tales' very own modern-day Sufi poet and contributor Azhar Iqbal - Daamn-e-dil par dua likhi hui hai Ishq Ki, hai dhanak ke rang jaisa Perahan darvesh ka"
Losely translated, this beautiful couplet describes the clothing of the dervish and compares it to the sheer purity of the Sun's rays.
"The prayer of love is etched on the heart of the dervish, his garments are the colour of sunlight."
This poem alludes to the cleanilness of thought and purity of mind that Sufis achieve while contemplating the highest power, and losing themselves in its devotion and worship.
Much emphasis is laid on the artistic quality of Urdu glyphs. Sufis have long used this trait of calligraphy to celebrate and venerate their Maker. Poetic expressions of love are elevated in their value when inscribed with beauty and skill in calligraphic style.
