The dance of the dervishes is one of the most impressive features of the mysticisms of Sufi life.
It is a form of active meditation which originated among certain groups and is still practiced by the Sufi Derishes of the Mevlevi Order, of which Rumi is believed to be the originator. Jalāl Uddin Muhammad Rumi, known more popularly as Mevlana Rumi, or simply "Rumi" was a 13th-century Persian poet. Sufi Whirling is a custom or worship ceremony through which the performer aims to reach the source of all perfection. Sufis go through these exertions to attain an ecstatic trance and reach God. Dervishes try to approach God not by religious scholarship, but by virtues and individual experience. This is sought through abandoning their ego or personal desires by spinning their bodies in repetitive circles. While whirling, their arms are open and the right arm is directed to the sky, ready to receive God's benevolence, while the left hand is turned down toward the earth. Their focus is on the universal values of love and service, deserting the illusions of the Self.
